ABSTRACT

There are two further significant reasons for wanting to engage with Aristotle's thought in detail here. The first is that there are important parts of his thought which I do not think have been very clearly elaborated by Aristotle himself and which are directly relevant to our present concerns. The second reason is that my interpretation of Aristotle's account of the soul (psyche) differs from the canonical interpretation and this has forced me to provide a relatively detailed account of why I think my interpretation is better.2 This second reason, I might add, is related to the first in that it is because Aristotle is not clear about aspects of his conception of psyche that scholars have been led astray.
