ABSTRACT

In the literature there is a paucity of data on the development and procurement of training simulators and on the design and implementation of simulator-based training programmes. Therefore, in the MASTER project a field orientation was perfonned to provide an inventory of current practices in developing simulatorbased training programmes and in the delivery of instruction. To this end, MASTER contributors visited a number of training establishments and administered questionnaires to personnel involved in simulator-based training, in most cases instructors. The main issues addressed by the questionnaires were: the role of simulators in overall training; the selection and characteristics of trainees; the selection and responsibilities of the instructors; the composition of training sessions; the role of feedback and assessment; the transfer and retention of knowledge and skills; the facilities available to support the instructors; the development and/or procurement of the simulator; the limitations of the simulator; and expected future developments.
