ABSTRACT

The importance of visual cues, i.e., visual sources of information, is that almost all relevant operations with mobile weapon platforms on the ground and in the air depend on them. The primacy of vision compared to the other human senses is obvious. The multitude and complexity of cues that can be processed by the human visual system exceed those of any other sensory system by several orders of magnitude. Vision is also the only way to perceive complex information at considerable distances from the observer, and is essential in vehicle control, target acquisition and weapon delivery. There are few exceptions, such as basic instrument flight and beyond-visual-range engagements, where OTW visual cues playa secondary role in ground vehicle or aircraft operations.
