ABSTRACT

On 16 May 1924, a young engineer at Bell Telephone Laboratories named Walter Shewhart wrote a memo to his superiors suggesting that they adopt a process called statistical process control. Shewhart’s work was the start of the quality movement, as organizations know it today.
