ABSTRACT

An intranet has become the one thing every organization must have and, during the past year or so, there has been a flurry of short courses, conference sessions and exhibitions to go to, as well as a positive flood of journal articles, books, and chapters in books (like this one). Much that is currently available is written from the point of view of either an IT fanatic or a consultant, with the result that a good deal of it tends to be full of jargon. This chapter, since it forms part of a handbook of library and information manage ment, is deliberately written from an information professional’s viewpoint. Any jargon that it contains is there simply to be explained. There are also some suggestions for further reading, and (since the whole topic sprang from it) some URLs (addresses) from the Internet for guidance. A single chapter can only give the broadest picture of intranet use and it should be borne in mind that this is only a starting point for a very complex subject.
