ABSTRACT

In-house research ‘should be encouraged, even demanded, by library managements because without it there can hardly be any objective assessment of services, performance, or needs’. It is also crucial for the development of staff, and the continuing evolution of the profession. Overall, therefore, management cannot do other than support the need for research, and has a responsibility to promote it - creating the conditions, encouraging and supporting, and ‘managing these activities effectively’ (Allen, 1986).
