ABSTRACT

The year 2006 marks the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and has been officially designated the international year of deserts and desertification. This anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the first decade of UNCCD implementation and assess what has been achieved thus far and what remains to be done to deploy this convention as a fully effective instrument of global environmental governance.
