ABSTRACT

The significance of a sound education which is appropriate to the needs of the individual is an important but too often overlooked theme in the writings of George Eliot. In her fiction, essays, and letters, Eliot repeatedly points out ways in which people are influenced by their educational experiences or the lack of such experiences. As part of this process, she not only examines various sorts of schooling in England but also looks northward to Scotland and across the Channel to the Continent.
