ABSTRACT

When set beside the patrimonies recorded in respect of the inhabitants of other small towns and villages in the southern Sienese contado, those entered in the Tavola delle possessioni for Sant’Angelo in Colle indicate that there were several wealthy men in the early fourteenth-century village, even though not all of them would appear to fit into the top five or seven percentile, as identified by Andrea Barlucchi.1 In 1320, there were at least seven individuals and at least two groups of heirs in Sant’Angelo in Colle whose assets placed them in a category well above other members of the local population at that date.
