Buildings have physical substance. They enclose

and define space (emptiness) but this enclosure

is through material (matter). The relationship

between the thing being enclosed and the

enclosure – and hence the composite experiential

eect – is mediated through a combination of the

way the fabric of the building is put together and

the physical qualities of the fabric itself.
