ABSTRACT
Understanding how we experience the environment provides the foundation on which a theory of the functioning of the artificial environment can be built. Our knowledge is far from complete but it has enhanced our understanding of the role of the built environment in the lives of people at different stages in their life cycles living in different cultural and geographic settings. While there are interesting physiological and cultural differences among people, the basic nature of human beings is universal.
