ABSTRACT

French filmmaker Agnès Varda chronicled the other America during her three-year stay in California, from 1967 to 1970. She travelled there with her husband Jacques Demy, who had been awarded a production contract with Columbia Pictures in 1967.1 Varda’s interest in politics and counterculture are evident in the films and documentaries she shot during her trip: Black Panthers,2 Lions Love3 and Uncle Yanco.
