ABSTRACT
The international protection of freedom of religion and belief improved substantially during the second half o f the twentieth century.1 Religious liberty has travelled a long w ay since it was recognized by the Universal Declaration o f Human Rights in 1948. Together with various United N ational initiatives,2 and impelled by the 1948 Universal Declaration, other important steps have been taken by international organizations with a more limited geographical reach.
