ABSTRACT

Oliver Chase Quick was born in the vicarage at Sedbergh – then in the West Riding of Yorkshire, now in Cumbria – on 21 June 1885.2 His father was Robert Hebert Quick (1831-91),3 trained in mathematics and the classics, who became an educationist with special interests in the training of secondary school teachers and the practical application of educational ideas. R. H. Quick served two brief curacies and taught in a number of schools, including Harrow and Cranleigh.4 He was not of robust health, hence his acceptance of the living at Sedbergh in 1883. Sadly, the duties of the ministry drained him and he resigned in January 1887. In 1876 he had married Harriet Bertha, daughter of General Chase Parr of the Indian army. As well as Oliver, they had a daughter, Dora.
