ABSTRACT

This chapter will address the problem of fear and extreme stress reactions among pilots. We will begin by discussing the phenomenon of pilots who suffer from fear of flying, and then move on to some other manifestations of stress, including paralysis of action (the 'frozen pilot syndrome') and anticipatory stress reactions. We will also discuss the problem of combat stress, not only because of its specific effects on military aircrew but also because the study of human behaviour and reactions in this most extreme of stress conditions can provide certain insights into the nature of stress, stress resistance, and performance in more routine circumstances -- both in air operations and, indeed, in everyday life.
