ABSTRACT
In this chapter the joint-stock company is regarded as a decisive organizational innovation of the nineteenth century. Through the joint-stock company productive assets were made more impersonal and the importance of financial markets rose. The financial markets channelled resources to the new expanding sectors of the industrialized economy. Thus, the joint-stock company reinforced a Schumpeterian process of creative destruction which was a vital feature of the modernization process.
