ABSTRACT
The text of Fox’s translation was much more than a mere translation. His choice of words and phrases and his interpolations, sometimes a word or two and sometimes several sentences, are small windows into the world of southern England in 1516 and early 1517, giving narrow but significant glimpses of the conditions of monastic life and its problems, and the religious sensibilities of nuns and a bishop who believed in the capacity of nunneries to become small, gathered and perfect communities.
