ABSTRACT

Mergers and acquisitions are two of many means a firm may use to increase its size or to achieve both economies of scale and scope. In general, an acquisition takes place when some or all of the stock or assets of a firm are purchased by another, while a merger is achieved through a transaction that combines the assets of one or more firms in a new firm. Policy concerns generally focus on three types of mergers: horizontal, vertical and conglomerate.
