ABSTRACT

While they are physically, psychologically and socially capable of taking care of themselves, most older people prefer to live and are actually living in houses which are in many ways identical to those of other age groups (Blank, 1988). However, the choice of dwelling for older people may change in response to retirement, widowhood, declining finances and chronic health problems (Golant, 1992). As a person becomes less capable of taking care of herselfThimself and starts relying on fixed sources of income such as old age pensions, there are many obstacles and challenges to remaining in the same house and under the same conditions.
