ABSTRACT

This chapter is excerpted from our facilitation training manual (McDonnell, Jobe, & Dismukes, 1997), which was developed as a practical guide to help airline instructors facilitate debriefings of Line Operational Simulations (LOS) effectively. 1 It is based on our study of Line Oriented Flight Training (LOFT) debriefings at several U.S. airlines (Dismukes, Jobe, & McDonnell, 1997), which is summarized in chapter 2 of this volume. This chapter will present specific facilitation techniques instructors can use to achieve debriefing objectives, which are derived from the literature cited in the first two chapters and our research findings presented in chapter 2. This guidance is designed to be flexible so it can be tailored to the individual needs of each airline. Part 1 clarifies the purpose and objectives of facilitation in the LOS setting. Part 2 provides recommendations for clarifying roles and expectations and presents a model for organizing discussion. Part 3 suggests techniques for eliciting active crew participation and in-depth analysis and evaluation. Finally, in Part 4, these techniques are organized according to the facilitation model.
