ABSTRACT

The world is full of the works of human hands-artefacts. While being without other living humans is not too difficult for individuals to accomplish, it is almost impossible to conceive of a situation in which one might be unaccompanied by at least one artefact-clothing, a ring, a watch, a chair, shoes. Dant puts this graphically: ‘If you think that interacting with things is not important, just try to remember the last time that you were not engaged in some sort of “material interaction”’ (2005: xi).
