ABSTRACT

There has been little research into the history and development of internal communication, although the prevailing view is that this is a new discipline that has progressed from tactical to strategic operation in the past two decades. This chapter traces the roots of modern internal communication to nineteenth century publications. It is based on research undertaken for a paper presented at the 2013 International History of Public Relations conference at Bournemouth University and subsequent discussion with a number of respected authorities in the field.
