ABSTRACT

Human activity has always been a cause of changes to the surface of the Earth. These modifications have particularly accelerated during the second half of the twentieth century, stimulated by increasingly rapid economic development and a demographic explosion. The fragility of the environment now appears alarming: the greenhouse effect; the reduction of equatorial forests - the planet's large lungs - with the consequent release of millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere; increasing desertification.. .these are only some of the results, visible to everybody.
