ABSTRACT

La Revue des revues 1, no. 9 (1 May 1904) Toby Cole and Helen Krich Chinoy, eds., Directing the Play (New York, 1953)

For several years dramatic art has been on a path of evolution. Naturalism on the one hand, and Wagnerism on the other, have violently shifted the earlier boundaries. Certain things which, twenty years ago, were not "theatre" (according to that ridiculously hallowed expression), have become almost commonplace. Hence some confusion: these days we hardly know the style appropriate to a particular play; and the liking we have for foreign productions will not guide us.
