ThereisaworkbyaPrimitivepainterintheLouvre,whetherknown orunknownIcannotsay,whowillneverrepresentamajorschoolin arthistory.Theartist'snameisLucasvanLeyden'~andtomymind heinvalidatesthefourorfivehundredyearsofpaintingcomingafter him,renderingthemuseless.ThepaintinginquestionisentitledLot andHisDaughters,abiblicalsubjectinthestyleoftheperiod.The MiddleAgescertainlydidnotinterprettheBibleaswedotodayand thispaintingisastrangeexampleofthemysticalinferenceswhich canbededucedfromit.Inanyevent,itspathosisnoticeableeven fromadistance,*sinceitaffectsthemindbyakindofstrikingvisual harmony,intenselyactiveinthewholeworkyetcaughtataglance. Evenbeforewehavemadeoutthesubject,wegetthefeelingsomething importantishappeninganditseemstheearisasaffectedbyitasthe eye.Atremendouslyimportantmentaldramaappearsaccumulated there,likeasuddencloudformationwhichthewindorsomemore immediatefatehasblowntheretoassesstheirthunderbolts.
