ABSTRACT
At the end of the 17th century, the Austrian empire liberated Hungary from Turkish rule. It then became part of the Habsburg empire which brought a period of harmony and conflict. The Hungarian nobility was allowed to maintain their privileges and institutions, dating from the Middle Ages. However, foreign military and financial decisions came from Vienna and the Hungarian Diet's authority was limited.
