ABSTRACT
Germany is a country of immigration, an 'Einwanderungsland'. Although this seems an all too obvious fact, it was only recently acknowledged by the German government and all the major political parties. This move was encouraged by discussions about a need for new immigrants to help balance the demographic structure and close a skills gap. But as Germany may be entering a new phase of labour immigration, how much do we know about its previous experiences with this phenomenon?
