ABSTRACT
The Single European Sky is the European Commission’s initiative for the reform of air traffic management. It started in late 1999 with extensive preparation for a regulatory package that was eventually adopted by the Council of Ministers and European Parliament in early 2004. From that time on, the Commission concentrated on elaborating detailed implementation rules to give effect to the principles and working methods set out in the legislation. A technological complement to the Single European Sky package was launched in 2006 under the ‘SESAR’ label. This chapter will set out the main elements of the EU’s approach in this area and will provide some perspective on the priorities for the next few years.
