ABSTRACT

According to Agenda 27, 'increased ethical awareness' in environmental decision making is desirable (Agenda 27, 31.8). Among the measures proposed in order to achieve this is increased cooperation at national and international levels 'to develop codes of practice and guidelines regarding environmentally sound and sustainable development, taking into account the Rio Declaration and existing codes of practice and guidelines' (31.10). The authors of Agenda 21 propose that this is brought about, inter alia, by appointing 'national advisory groups on environmental and developmental ethics' and through 'education and training in developmental and environmental ethical issues [being extended] to integrate such objectives into education curricula and research priorities' (31.10).
