ABSTRACT
For supervisors, it is of paramount importance that students have a clear idea of the requirements here. Such an understanding will form the foundation of the developing intellectual independence. Getting it right early on should lead to the potential for much lighter-touch supervision later in the doctoral process, such as the liberating coach style of supervision described in Chapter 4.
