ABSTRACT

Taft Broome's "Concrete Sumo" is an effective reminder that responsible engineering decision malting involves more than reasoning from ethical premises and factual circumstances to an appropriate conclusion about what one ought to do. Broome emphasizes the importance of Uncle Roy's good character, involving both courage and wisdom, rather than distinctions between right and wrong. Uncle Roy has led Broome to find the solution to his problem. He has also helped Broome realize in himself what qualities of character are needed if he is to succeed as a responsible and respected engineer. These qualities of character are connected with an audience, a community of engineers whose respect it is important to acquire. Uncle Roy's good character is needed both for determining what the best decision is and for carrying out that decision. The darkness beneath the serving counter enabled us to do this without being noticed by the partygoers. However, this same darkness made it difficult to see ice in sink.
