ABSTRACT
John Bayley's discussion of 'The Darkling Thrush' in An Essay on Hardy identifies an inimitable principle of disunity at work in the poem, which he takes as a key to Hardy's characteristic effects in both the poetry and the prose. Bayley writes:
Throughout his work, the ways in which we are absorbed into it, moved, delighted, are never co-ordinated, never really unified.1
