ABSTRACT
Efficiency in fisheries is, in general, about doing the best we possibly can with the resources (fish stock and fishing inputs available) we have available. Improvements in efficiency by vessels are desirable provided that there exists a management structure that prevents biological and economic overexploitation. If not, increased efficiency, or the ability to catch more fish for a given amount of fishing effort, can be detrimental to sustainability.
