ABSTRACT

This chapter is about a new means of distinguishing locations where nomadic Seljuq tribesmen have passed some time. It concerns the identi fication of a particular type of ceramic which, together with corroborating evidence, is the basis for the proposal that it was used, and probably manufactured, by them. The potential importance of a whole new body of evidence like this is immense. Hitherto, any comprehension of exactly where these people were, when, and what they did, has been based on passing references in hostile sources, since their own primarily oral culture has left no written records.*1 At present the new information is restricted by the author's own experiences to a number of locations in Lycia: it is hoped that a direct result of general awareness of these ceram ics will be their identification elsewhere, and the eventual emergence of a larger-scale picture of an unchronicled culture.
