ThepioneerreinforcedconcreteworkinCaliforniawas concentratedinandaroundSanFrancisco.PeterH.Jackson, basinghisworkonthatofHyatt,beganuseofthematerial forsidewalksasearlyas1877.In1885hetestedthematerialforuseinfloorsandwalls,noting,"...theinventionmay proveofgreatvalue...."Throughthe1880sand1890s, Californiaarchitectsandengineerscontinuedtodiscussand developthematerial,chieflyforitsfireproofingpotential. Mostofthenotable,earlyreinforcedconcretebuildingwork intheseyearswasthatofengineerErnestL.Ransome,and architectGeorgeW.Percy,workingincollaborationfrom SanFrancisco.
