ABSTRACT

The rites described in the previous chapter are linked by socio-linguistic culture. Links between the rites discussed in this chapter are more tenuous. The Byzantine rite has its origins in the rites of Caesarea, Antioch, Jerusalem and Constantinople. Armenia received Christianity from Caesarea and Syria (probably Edessa), and was later influenced by the Byzantine rite and the Latin rite. The Coptic rite has links with the canons of Hippolytus and Sarapion, and the Ethiopic rite is derived from the Coptic.
