ABSTRACT

The amount of research and expertise that goes into the making of a drilling rig is by necessity vast. This chapter considers the older type of rotary table rig, the more modern and in most cases more efficient top-drive units and the much older and first "mechanical" method of putting a hole in the ground, the cable percussion rigs. With the top drive rig, such a winch should be provided to cope with auxiliary functions such as general tool handling and tidying up the site, but it has two major functions. There are: Casing, and Tripping. Power is either through shafts and pinions from the prime mover or, on more "modern" rigs, from hydraulic motors. Another type of rig is usually quite small and when used to drill water wells, the wells are small and shallow. Unfortunately, the carousel cannot handle drill collars.
