ABSTRACT

Of all those technologies that sprang from a theoretical scientific inquiry, surely the most powerful and the most ominous is nuclear energy. Even if we do deconstruct our nuclear armoury, the nuclear power station is likely to survive, as it is one of our most international technologies. There is one such station that could be anywhere on this planet, but for the inscription, which is in Hungarian. In front of the reception area is a fountain surrounded by several portrait busts of Hungarian physicists: it is evidently implied, and with good reason, that these men played a notable part in the origins of nuclear power.
