ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents closing thoughts of the key issues discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on what initially seemed a fairly straightforward task, of demolishing West's argument in the light of this philosophical literature. However the market model which he laid out emerged as resistant to these criticisms. We have confronted it where it seemed weakest, and it has, by and large, survived. It explains West's market model has only minimal involvement in education. The chapter explores the challenge in this market model by addressing concerns about equality of opportunity. It describes the terms of a curriculum for 'education for democracy'. It found philosophical difficulties with such a formula for the curriculum. The chapter provides that there were problems with using an 'education for autonomy' to similarly flesh out the curriculum in West's market model. The disestablishment of the school, for the separation of school and state, can be sustained.
