ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a brief outline of the broader cultural heritage in which libraries, archives and museums form one sector. It then considers disaster management and emergency planning from a general perspective. It is thus intended that the wider context in which disaster management in libraries, archives and museums functions is introduced before looking at the sector itself and developments there since 2001. The major international non-governmental agencies and their work is outlined, followed by an introduction to the context of archives, libraries, museums and disaster management in the United Kingdom.
