ABSTRACT
The Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in Europe. It is a symbol of Latvian identity. During the Russian occupation (1945-1991) and Russification it was a tiny island of freedom for many Latvians who came here to speak their language, sing their songs and celebrate their ‘illegal’ national festivals.
