ABSTRACT

The FANS CNS/ATM system has been eagerly embraced by the air traffic service providers and airlines in the Asia/Pacific Region as the only viable means of overcoming the problems of the past and catering for increasing air traffic. It has always been difficult and often impossible to provide high quality communications, navigation and surveillance services throughout the Region from the old CNS because of the limitations imposed by oceans, mountains, jungles, deserts, etc., coupled with a lack of resources and expertise. The result has been a less than optimum air traffic management system. To compound this, the Region has the highest predicted growth rate for air traffic in the world where the lATA estimates show that, by the year 2010, over one half of the world's international passenger traffic will be in the Asia/Pacific Region.
