ABSTRACT

Playgrounds for public use began as a means of reforming the industrial city, they took hold as a standard offering of modern city planning after World War I and became even more important when the automobile took over the streets. It became essential to get the play off the streets where it had always happened so that the cars could be free to move at greater speeds. Adult considerations and convenience have always been the motivating factor in the provision of public playgrounds. Controlling where the children were and ensuring that they were engaged in appropriate activities was and remains the underlying goal.
