ABSTRACT

The role that sports facilities are now considered to play in the regeneration of urban areas has been well documented (Glyptis and Pack 1989; Latham and McCormack 2008; Law 1994). Cities bidding to host the Summer Olympic Games have lead the charge, with Barcelona, Manchester, Sydney and London all citing urban regeneration as part of the motivation for hosting the Games. The projects delivered range from comprehensive neighbourhood redevelopment to small-scale urban beautification schemes. This strategy has trickled down so that smaller events and single facilities are now expected to stimulate further economic benefits and, occasionally, physical regeneration, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle to spectators.
