ABSTRACT

People with learning disabilities are not exempt from illness. A common misconception is that having a learning disability is like having a disease, rather than a range of abilities that may be different or fewer than the wider population. The important point is that, like the general population, people with learning disabilities vary on an individual basis. Also, exposure to age-related conditions, such as senile dementia, becomes more probable as people live longer. People with learning disabilities can equally present with the signs of dementia.
