ABSTRACT

Probably one of the most well known reports of a head injury is that of Phineas Gage, the foreman of a road construction gang in the USA in 1848, when a tamping iron was driven through his skull following an explosion. He survived, but the damage to his frontal lobes led to a considerable change in personality, from being a considerate, efficient and well-balanced man to being obstinate, profane and showing little consideration for others (Haste & Gregory,1993).
