ABSTRACT
The exploration and commercialization of the Americas in the 16th century is sometimes compared to the contemporary efforts to commercialize space. Governments in search of gold and other precious metals funded early explorations of the Americas, but establishing trade and settlements in the new territories took much longer. Today the search for 'gold' includes the successful mining of radio frequency bands that permit a profitable space-based communications industry.
