ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter extends our investigation of Durkheim’s writings with an analysis of the relationship between religion and morality as found in his work entitled Professional Ethics and Civic Morals (hereafter PECM). As with Durkheim’s writings on education, PECM also has a reputation for being underestimated by subsequent generations of scholars. The topics dealt with in this posthumously published book arose out of a series of lectures that Durkheim gave at Bordeaux between the years 1896 and 1900 and then repeated at the Sorbonne in Paris between 1902 and 1915.
