ABSTRACT
John Milbank's Theology and Social Theory is a vigorous attempt to release theology from its self-inflicted bondage to the anti-theological reason characteristic of modern social theory. Milbank wishes to show that theology does not require sociological diagnosis of social problems and moreover that there is not a significant sociological 'reading' of religion and Christianity of which theology must take account (TST, p. 3).1
