ABSTRACT

Naturalisticdecisionresearchhasdemonstratedtheimportanceofstudying humandecisionmakingintheeverydayworldratherthanthelaboratory.The naturalisticapproachhashighlightedanumberofkeyfeatureswhichhavebeen neglectedbylaboratorybaseddecisionresearch.Itisoneofthesefeatures,time pressure,whichisthefocusofthepresentpaper.Althoughthetheoryand researchreviewedinthischapterarelargelyexperimentalinapproach,itis arguedthatthisbodyofknowledgeisofrelevancebothforanunderstandingof theeffectsoftimepressureineverydaysituationsandforthedevelopmentof proceduresforaidingtimepressureddecisionmakinginprofessionaland personalcontexts.InarecentreviewMauleandEdland(1997)identifiedseveral differentareasofresearchinvestigatingtheeffectsoftimepressureonjudgement anddecisionmaking.Eachoftheseisbrieflydiscussedbelow.
